5-5-09 "i always feel like somebody's watchin' me"

I have a question for you: How do you act when you are alone with your friends? What do you talk about? Stop reading and consider for a moment.

Did you think about it? Good.  Did it give you happy memories, or make you squirm in your seat? What would your mother say if she knew what you talked about and did?  If a stranger could hear your conversations, what would he think of you?

About four years ago, my dad, who was a full-time professional surveyor at that point, was on a job near a McDonalds. He had finished loading his satelite gear and the rest of the equipment into his truck and was driving towards the McDonalds when he noticed that a voice was coming in on his radio. It  was the girl taking orders at the McDonalds drive-through. He could hear what she was saying. She was taking orders, then talking through her headset to another McDonald's employee when the McDonald's patrons drove away. . She was making fun of the customers and using dirty language. The two of them thought she was very funny. Meanwhile, my dad had ordered at was coming to the window to recieve his food. Just before he got there, he heard the girl cracked an extremely crude joke over her headset. She slid open the window and gave him his food. He took it and said, "Thanks. By the way, that wasn't very nice and you have a potty mouth." Then he drove away. Through the radio he could hear her exclaim to her friend, "Oh my gosh! He knew what I said! How did he hear me? I didn't say anything about the boss, did I? Oh, my gosh!"

Always be careful what you say. you never know who could be listening! And even if you think you are totally alone, God is there.  And don't put it past Him to give you a wakeup call- He might even use a surveyor in a pickup truck to get his point across!

7-23-09 "hitler youth-a drowning millstone"

Today I saw a video of hitler speaking to Hitler Youth. There were thousands of young men crowded into an area, eager to see their leader.  It was easy to watch passively as the mass cried "Hiel Hitler! Heil Hitler!" But then they began to show the children close up. Yes, children. It had never quite sunk in how young some of these poeple were! There were six-year-olds with baby faces in the crowd. There were good-looking teenage boys who had been trained since childood to be a Nazi through this nightmarish boyscout like club: Hitler Youth!

I remember seeing a photo in my history book of a fourteen-year-old german soldier being dragged off by an Allied officer after the war. He was too small for his uniform and he was crying, terrified. I felt sorry for him. He had probably killed people, true, and was a racist Nazi (most likely). But he had been led astray by Hitler since childhood! (Actually, he was not quite even past it.) It was what he was told is right. It reminds me of a verse:  Luke 17:2 "It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. "

3-30-09 " 'hey, paris-- our enemy, old menelaus, just gave us a huge, hollow horse! Let's roll it inside the gates!' "

A couple weeks ago I did a STUPID thing. The rule of our computer has always been: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DOWNLOAD ANYTHING OFF OF ANY SITE WHICH YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST. Guess who downloaded something off a site I did not know and trust?

I was just looking for free sheet music. But the site we usually use did not have anything I was in the mood for. So I Googled the name of the song I wanted and I found this INCREDIBLE site with scads of awesome sheet music! I downloaded one after another, looking for the perfect song. Suddenly, Norton Internet Security gave me a pop-up, warning me that I had a virus in my computer. I looked at the files under My Computer and I saw...... 3,000 Trojan Horses. I had no idea Trojan Horses had anything to do with computers. I thought the Trojan Horse was just a large, hollow, wooden horse from Greek lore. Apparently, a Trojan Horse is also a virtual weapon of mass destruction created by some sadistic person who thinks its awfully fun to ruin people's lives.

I got to thinking. We all come in contact with Trojan Horses in our spiritual lives. We find something that seems harmless enough, like a a large wooden horse, free digital sheet music, or a funny movie, and before we realize that the apparently innocuous object has somehting destructive hidden inside it, we are under attack. If we react quickly and go to God for help, the invader can be quickly annhilated.   But allowing a Trojan Horse into our lives IS our choice.  If you just stop and think, that big wooden horse may begin to look suspicious. Just as the Trojans could have seen past the deception (come on, people. A big, huge, wooden horse from an angry army you just defeated in battle is dropped off at the gates to you city. Sounds preeeetty suspicious to me!), and I should have known better than to download unknown internet files, you can check out YOUR Trojan Horse before you roll it into your gates. Test everything by scripture- your "Sword of the Spirit" is the best defense against an invading army.

*And just in case you were wondering, my dad took care of the virus problem as soon as he got home*

3-24-09 "my hand is not a pincushion!"

What I'd really like to be doing right now is sewing. I have a folding table, on which is scattered notions, fabric, and of course, my machine, tucked away in my room right now.  My dad said I can move the whole kit 'n caboodle downstairs and set it up in his office. It is very generous of him, especially since the whole room has already been taken over by a legion of school books, games, and scrapbooking accessories that belong to my sister and me.

I have been sewing a matching kitchen set consisting of a potholder, an oven mitt, and a casserole mit. I have not sewed anything in a over a year. I am out of practice, so I have been spending most of my sewing time taking out stitches and jabbing myself with sharp objects. (My seam ripper has been my best friend lately. Until it draws blood- then I hate it just about as much as I despise that uncoopertive bobbin.) You know, I think life is kind of like that. We go full speed ahead, run off track and spend more time going back and fixing mistakes than actually making any progress. And in the process we prick our fingers with a pin or two! I am just so grateful that when I let God run my life, I can get more done and waste less time fixing mistakes. Because when I try to take over, I just run off track.

     You'd think I'd learn.

When I get those kitchen items finished,  I will post pictures for you to see. Then I will tuck them away in my hope chest until I get a home of my own. They will join the crocheted potholders and dishcloths I have made (and some of my grandmas have also added to that collection). Well, I am going to head to my room now and finish The Great Battle of the Bobbin. Oh, and before I go, I just have one quick question for you :

Who is running YOUR life's sewing machine?

2-14-09 "let me get this straight-- you only want me at your b-day party if I own an ipod nano and a flat-iron?"

Status quo? No, thank you. Fit in? Who, me?

Are you kidding? I'll never "fit in" . I am called to stand out.  Romans 2:12: "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will. "    You know, its hard to walk down the street and pass a couple of girls your age who obviously spend their lives trying to fit in, and be given "the judgemental glance". You know the one, the girls (or guys, whatever) stop chatting to eachother as if by agreement, scan you with their eyes from head to toe, checking to see if you have the "cool"  haircut, the "in" clothes and the "right" brand of shoes. If you don't pass their "stylish test", they avoid eye contact, pretend they don't even see you, and walk on by. I usually fail. They can live with my hair, even though it only has a simple cut and no side bangs. Its naturally straight, after all. Even if its still (gasp!) my natural hair color without fake highlights.  Its the make-up-free-and-modest look that gets them. Seriously, though, even though being shunned does hurt a little, I really don't care. Somebody who is going to judge me by where I shop for clothes, how hip I dress, or where I go to school isn't worth having as a friend anyway. The kind of friend I want is a friend who likes me for who I am - whether my t-shirt says "Aeropostale" or not.   In any case, are the kind of people who are trying so hard to be accepted in our preverse culutre being a "city on a hill"?

Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company. -George Washington

That quote kind of goes right along with with "he who walks witht the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." (From Proverbs somewhere.)

Thanks so much to all of you who have decided not to "fit in" and who have acceptd people for who we are instead who makes our tennis shoes; who have chosen friends by their character and not their popularity.

2-13-09 "he's so old, you'd think his birthday cake would go up in flames"

If you ask somebody what was special about yesterday, they will probably tell you that it is Darwin Day, a day dedicated to celebrating Charles Darwin's 200th birthday. They will probably not remember that it is also Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday. What I would like to know is, why is everybody forgetting the birthday of one of the world's top government leaders and cellebrating the birthday of a racist instead? What happened to getting rid of bigotry? (First let me state that I am fully aware that Abraham Lincoln had some racist ideas as well, especially early in his presidency, but I believe that, whatever his view of the African race, he more than made up for it in the long run with his actions.) Perhaps you are not aware of the full title of his book, which you probably know as The Origin of Species. The rest of the title has been convieniently dropped from the cover of the newer copies of the said book. The full title of the book is On the Origen of Species, or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life. What?! FAVORED races? considering Darwin's own race, I believe it is easy to deduce which race Charles veiws as the "favored" races. Not only is his thoery sadly lacking in evidance and cerdibility (a subject I will go into later), but it is also pro-racism. I think that it is very sad that, while some people commend racial diversity and tolerance, they idolize a man who is a racist himself.

You want to know the true origin of species? In honor of Lincoln and his earth's origin veiws,  check out Genesis chapters 1-2. Happy birthday, Abe!

"In regard to this Great Book, I have but to say, it is the best gift God has given to man. All the good the Savior gave to the world was communicated through this book."

- Abraham Lincoln , "Reply to Loyal Colored People of Baltimore upon Presentation of a Bible" (September 7, 1864)
